London Gold Vault Holdings Rose 3.78% in Q3. What Changed?

Key Takeaways:
- London gold vault holdings increased 3.78% in Q3 2026, reaching 9,821 tonnes.
- Silver vault holdings rose 3.22% to 28,985 tonnes, even as prices swung sharply.
- The figures only track bullion stored in London; they do not establish a rise in global investment demand.
London’s gold vault holdings rose 3.78% during the third quarter of 2026, reaching 9,821 tonnes. Silver holdings increased 3.22% to 28,985 tonnes. The London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) published those quarterly comparisons on October 14, in its Precious Metals Market Report: Q3 2026.
Both metals gained during the quarter, despite sharp price swings. Gold rose 2.12%, with a low-to-high trading range of 17.22%. Silver gained 4.26%, with a wider 27.08% range. The findings place London’s growing physical inventories alongside a volatile trading quarter (LBMA, October 14, 2026).
What did the LBMA’s Q3 report reveal?
The report, titled Riding the Range, covers July through September 2026. It puts London gold holdings at approximately $1.3 trillion. The silver stock was valued at $56.6 billion (LBMA, October 14, 2026).
Gold’s quarterly low was $3,978.55 on July 1. Its high reached $4,663.70 on August 24. Most London auction prices nevertheless settled between $4,000 and $4,400.
Silver traded between $55.29 on July 17 and $70.26 on August 28. Its quarterly gain therefore masks substantial movement between those dates (LBMA, October 14, 2026).

The September-end inventory totals had already appeared in LBMA’s October 7 vault-data release. What’s new on October 14 is the quarterly comparison and wider market review (LBMA, October 7 and 14, 2026).
Why were gold and silver prices so volatile?
The LBMA identified interest-rate expectations, geopolitical tensions, and central-bank purchases as important influences on gold.
The Federal Reserve raised its policy rate by 25 basis points on September 16 (Federal Reserve, September 16, 2026). Gold’s LBMA afternoon benchmark subsequently moved from $4,328.20 that day to $4,176.30 on September 30. The report describes higher rates and a stronger dollar as sources of pressure. However, central-bank buying continued to support the market (LBMA, October 14, 2026).
Silver faced an additional industrial question. The LBMA highlighted efforts by solar manufacturers to replace some silver with copper. Higher silver prices can strengthen the incentive to reduce metal use.
Meanwhile, the Silver Institute forecast a 0.3% decline in global silver mine output for 2026. That projection adds supply context, but it does not predict the direction of prices (LBMA, October 14, 2026; Silver Institute, World Silver Survey 2026, April 2026).

Do rising London vault holdings mean demand is increasing?
Not necessarily. LBMA vault figures measure bullion stored in participating London vaults. They do not directly measure worldwide investment purchases or total global demand.
Inventory can change when metal moves between storage centers or custody arrangements. As Altinavcisi explains in its guide to the London fix and unallocated gold, trading arrangements and direct ownership are different questions. Consequently, the increases do not prove fresh investor buying.
What the figures do establish is narrower: more gold and silver were held in the reporting London vaults at quarter-end. That distinction matters when interpreting the data (LBMA, October 14, 2026).
What does this mean for long-term physical bullion owners?
For long-term owners, the report separates short-term market prices from physical custody considerations. Prices responded to changing rate expectations and other news. Yet storage and ownership terms remain important regardless of the latest quote.
Before choosing a storage arrangement, investors should understand allocation, title, access, and withdrawal rights. Altinavcisi’s guide to vault storage versus gold ETFs explains some of those distinctions.
The LBMA report is not a buying signal. Instead, it offers a documented snapshot of London inventories during a volatile quarter.
